When the vertebrates arose there were a lot of different kinds of them. There is some fossil evidence for the origin of vertebrates. The fossil record provides evidence of the very early appearance of Chordates during the Cambrian Period, a time when most extinct and living animal phyla also originated.

Water vertebrates originated in fresh water.

The first plant on land was in the Ordovician Period of time. The origin and early evolution of land plants in the mid-Palaeozoic era, between about 480 and 360 million years ago,
was an important event in the history of life. A recent surge of interest, happened when palaeobotanical discoveries and advances in the
systematics of living plants, provides insight to the evolution of early land plants and suggests new
directions for future research.
